OMG! Sen McSally says she was raped in the Air Force by a superior officer
Arizona Sen. Martha McSally revealed her own experience with abuse -- as she said she would use her "voice and unique experience to work on this mission to stop military sexual assault for good."
"I am so inspired by the many survivors who found the strength to share their stories, report their assaults, and demand accountability, justice, and change," McSally said. "It is because of you that a light has been shined on this silent epidemic and so many improvements have been made—including more than 100 legislative actions over the last decade—on all aspects of military sexual assault."
"So, like you, I also am a military sexual assault survivor, but unlike so many brave survivors, I didn’t report being sexually assaulted," she continued. "Like so many women and men, I didn’t trust the system at the time. I blamed myself. I was ashamed and confused. I thought I was strong but felt powerless. The perpetrators abused their position of power in profound ways. In one case I was preyed upon and raped by a superior officer."
To share something like that on both a political and national stage takes real guts, especially in this day and age.
And it’s important because it underscores a real problem in the military. Like any institution it’s filled with humans, some of which will do horrible things to each other.
I expect we’ll see some who insult her with this now that she’s put it out there. I think it’s a given that it will happen on social media. I just hope her political enemies don’t use it against her because it would definitely be crossing a big line.
This isn’t a left or right issue. I’m a republican and I’ve nothing but compassion for this woman. This is a common occurrence and so is underreporting. If you don’t believe her now- you wouldn’t have believed her then- names given or not. Well reputed men have committed ill reputed offenses. Naming names would only make it that much more unbelievable. Ironically, the truth is, “You can’t handle the truth.” Really.
