Historic Move on Fertility Care: “Trump is the First President to Actually Do This,” Says Leavitt

In a bold and unprecedented step, President Trump has launched a new initiative aimed at tackling the soaring costs of in vitro fertilization (IVF) for Americans facing fertility challenges. At a recent press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized the groundbreaking nature of the move, stating, “Trump is the first president to actually do this.”

The newly announced executive order directs the administration to examine and dismantle unnecessary statutory and regulatory barriers that have long driven up the cost of IVF treatments. With a directive for the Domestic Policy Council to develop policy recommendations within the next 90 days, the administration aims to make these crucial reproductive services more affordable and accessible.

“IVF can cost tens of thousands of dollars per cycle—an expense that puts many families out of reach,” Leavitt explained. “By taking decisive action, we’re not only addressing the financial hurdles but also reaffirming our commitment to support families who dream of building a future together.”

Under current policies, most states do not require insurance companies to cover IVF treatments, leaving many to shoulder the full burden of costs related to medical procedures and associated medications. Critics have long argued that this regulatory gap has contributed to disparities in access to reproductive healthcare. The administration’s move is seen by supporters as a necessary intervention to correct these imbalances.

Advocates for reproductive rights have welcomed the initiative, noting that in 2021 alone over 85,000 infants were born through IVF—a testament to the treatment’s importance in modern family planning. However, many have also cautioned that meaningful change will depend on the effectiveness of the forthcoming policy recommendations and the willingness of stakeholders to embrace new solutions.

“Today’s announcement marks a turning point in federal support for fertility treatments,” Leavitt added. “We’re setting a precedent that acknowledges the critical need for accessible reproductive healthcare, and we’re determined to make that a reality for every American who needs it.”

As the administration works to finalize its policy recommendations, both supporters and skeptics are watching closely. With the promise of comprehensive reforms on the horizon, the coming weeks will be crucial in determining how this historic initiative reshapes the landscape of reproductive health in the United States.
