Tom Homan Defends Deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, Says Man Received Due Process

Trump’s border czar addresses mistaken deportation case amid broader immigration crackdown

Washington, D.C. — April 24 – Tom Homan, President Trump’s senior advisor on immigration and widely known as the administration’s “border czar,” defended the controversial deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia during a press briefing Wednesday, insisting that the Maryland man was afforded due process despite being mistakenly deported to El Salvador.

The case has drawn criticism from immigrant rights advocates and lawmakers after it was revealed that Abrego Garcia, a legal resident of the United States, was wrongly deported earlier this year due to what officials called a “bureaucratic misstep.”

“Mr. Abrego Garcia received the due process required under the law,” Homan told reporters. “The system worked as designed—even if the outcome was not ideal. We’re reviewing the case, but the procedures were followed.”

Abrego Garcia, who has lived in the U.S. for more than a decade and has no criminal record, was deported in March and only recently returned to the U.S. after the government acknowledged the error. Critics argue that his case highlights deeper flaws in the administration’s aggressive immigration policies.

Homan, however, pushed back on those concerns. “This administration is committed to enforcing immigration laws fairly and consistently. Mistakes, while unfortunate, do not change our mission to restore order at the border and uphold the rule of law,” he said.

When asked whether the administration would issue an apology or take disciplinary action against those involved in the case, Homan declined to comment, stating only that “the internal review is ongoing.”

The incident comes at a time of heightened tension over U.S. immigration policy, with President Trump vowing to further tighten enforcement and expand deportations as part of his second-term agenda.
