Remarks by President Biden on the Supreme Court Decision to Overturn Roe v. Wade

THE PRESIDENT:  Today is a — it’s not hyperbole to suggest a very solemn moment.  Today, the Supreme Court of the United States expressly took away a constitutional right from the American people that it had already recognized. They didn’t limit it.  They simply took it away.  That’s never been done to a right so important to so many Americans. But they did it.  And it’s a sad day for the Court and for the country. Fifty years ago, Roe v. Wade was decided and has been the law of the land since then. This landmark case protected a woman’s right to choose, her right to make intensely personal decisions with her doctor, free from the inter- — from interference of politics. It reaffirmed basic principles of equality — that women have the power to control their own destiny.  And it reinforced the fundamental right of privacy — the right of each of us to choose how to live our lives. Now, with Roe gone, let’s be very clear: The health and life of women...

“Appreciative of the opportunity”: Executive Editor Julie Pace describes AP ’s exclusive interview with President Biden on Reliable Sources :

Americans largely avoided CNN during Father’s Day weekend as the network   continued to hemorrhage support   from the demographic most coveted by advertisers.  CNN managed only 67,000 average viewers between ages 25-54 from June 18-19 for its smallest weekend audience since 2000 in the category that pays the bills. It was the network’s third-worst performance in the critical demo during a weekend since 1993.  It was also the network’s smallest audience on a Saturday among the demo since October 1993 when only 58,000 tuned in, and only the second time that CNN delivered under 60,000 demo viewers on a Saturday in 29 years.  In total-day viewership, CNN had its smallest Saturday audience since 1997 and its smallest primetime audience on a Saturday since 2000.  On Sunday, CNN’s "Reliable Sources" with left-wing host Brian Stelter averaged only 421,000 total viewers and a mere 56,000 among the demo. It was the smallest audience for "Reliable ...

CNN correspondent John Harwood defended President Biden's mental state against claims from Democratic strategists and media pundits that he's too old.

A new column in The Atlantic argues that Biden should not run for reelection because "he is too old." CNN's John Harwood reacts to the argument and puts it into perspective. CNN correspondent John Harwood defended President Biden against critics who have concerns over the president's age during a segment on Sunday’s "Reliable Sources." On Thursday, The Atlantic writer Mark Leibovich penned an article pleading Biden not to run for re-election in 2024 due to concerns over his age. Biden, who is already the oldest person to hold the office, will turn 80 in November and would be 82 by the beginning of a potential second term. "Let me put this bluntly: Joe Biden should not run for re-election in 2024. He is too old," Leibovich wrote. CNN host Brian Stelter discussed how there is a growing concern among those in the media and politics, that Biden may be too old to run for president for a second term. While Harwood agreed that Biden is old, he said i...

Why Biden’s inflation blitz is falling flat after a major miscalculation

Image
President Biden, mounting a media campaign to broadcast his concern about inflation, is said to be frustrated by his team’s handling of the issue that could decimate his party in November. But after his administration kept clinging to the notion that rising prices were temporary, he has few tools to employ beyond empathy. Once he rolled out the little-seen Treasury secretary, Janet Yellen–who told CNN "I think I was wrong then about the path that inflation would take"--it was time to turn the page.   But to what? An Oval Office photo op with Yellen and Fed chair Jerome Powell isn’t going to change many minds. Plus, the president’s message was mixed. "My plan to address inflation starts with a simple proposition–respect the Fed, respect the Fed’s independence." Well, Biden doesn’t have any choice, since the Federal Reserve is an independent agency, even if he was trying to draw a contrast with Donald Trump’s public hectoring of the Fed. Besides, it’s t...

'President Biden’s poll numbers are, to use the technical term, not good,' host John Berman said

Image
During a "New Day" segment focused on  Biden's polling troubles , CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten detailed Biden's hemorrhaging support amongst all political affiliations, but specifically pointed to his massive loss of independents as the main reason his numbers are underwater. "President Biden’s poll numbers are, to use the technical term, not good. And for Democrats there are even more troubling numbers underneath the surface," host John Berman said to begin the segment. "The numbers here, they tell a clear story." "They do tell a clear story. Again, to use the technical term, not good," Enten said before laying out how Biden's approval rating had dropped from 8 points positive in August to 5 points negative in October. "So essentially going in the wrong direction. Not good." Enten detailed how Biden had lost support from Democrats, Republicans and independents since August, but that the 19-point loss from the l...
